12 Hamilton Place 1994

Welcome to the home page for the excavation I directed in 1994 in Chester, UK.

This website aims to take you through some of the ideas that the project generated.

It was an unusual excavation for its time in focusing primarily on domestic remains of relatively recent date (1850s to 1939). Although domestic archaeology of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has won a place in the archaeology of some countries (such as the United States, Canada and Australia in the English-speaking world), it has not yet caught on in Britain.

I hope that I can convince you of the value of this sort of archaeology as you explore this website and discover what it was that drew me (and my colleagues) into something that turned out to be very unfamiliar and exciting.

Use the contents bar to the left to navigate your way round the site.
